Dumplings Around The World: Vegetable Thai Dumplings

Ingredients (For 32 pieces of dumplings)

For the dumplings:

  • Vegetable oil: 2 Tbs
  • Garlic, minced: 2 cloves
  • Grated, peeled fresh ginger root: 1 Tbs
  • Chili paste: 1 Tbs
  • Sliced green onions (white and pale green parts): 3 units
  • Diced zucchini: 4 cups (1 large unit)
  • Diced red bell pepper: 1 cup (1 unit)
  • Fresh lime juice: 1 Tbs
  • Chopped fresh cilantro: 1/2 cup
  • Square wrappers: 32 pieces

For the dipping sauce:

  • Tamari: 1/4 cup
  • Rice vinegar: 2 tbs
  • Asian sesame oil: 1 tbs
  • Chili paste: 1/2 tsp
  • Minced green onions: 1 tsp


Add some oil to a large skillet and place over high heat. Add garlic, ginger, and chili paste then stir-fry for 1 minute. Continue to add green onions and cook for another one minute. Add zucchini and bell pepper, stir well and cook until the vegetables become tender. This may take 3 to 4 minutes. Finally, lime juice and cilantro then remove the mixture from heat and let cool.

Transfer the mixture of filling to a food processor and chop finely.

Mix the dipping sauce: take a small bowl, mix all the sauce ingredients together.

Use plastic wrap to line the baking sheet. Start to wrap the dumplings.

Place a wrapper on a clean and flat working surface. Add one 1 tablespoon of the vegetable filling in the center of the wrapper, moist the edges of the wrapper with water. Gather the edges together and pinch tops to form a pouch. Place the finished dumplings on the baking sheet.

Repeat the steps to the remaining filling and wrappers.

Get a wok, add water and bring to boil over high heat. Make sure the water reaches 1/3 of the wok.

Oil the steamer and place the dumplings inside. Remember to leave some space between the dumplings so they will not stick together when cooked. Place a steamer on top of the wok. Cover it with a lid and steam until the dumplings are cooked through, about 15 minutes. Transfer the dumplings onto a plate and serve immediately with the dipping sauce.
